It feels weird seeing historian Kate Corrigan ordering soldiers. I know everything is building up to bigger threats with the Ogdru Hem under the earth but I feel like this turn is so generic and underdeveloped. The BPRD are no longer some paranormal FBI but are basically a generic military force. It's kind of sucked a lot of the intrigue and atmosphere from the series. Like watching Abe Sapien leading a team of Marines to shoot waves of enemies is probably the most boring thing ever. Every now and then we'll get a great moment like Abe discovering how he first transformed, the story of the Wendigo etc but it feels like I'm just watching Army men shooting Frogs. Developing that underused supporting cast and following the same template of those BPRD investigative stories in early Hellboy and his short stories.īut very quickly the book started to become less and less interesting and pretty generic. Hollow Earth felt like exactly what I was looking for. So I found out The Devil You Know is the true ending of the series and thought I'd dive into BPRD Plague of Frogs. Obviously a weakness from creating a spinoff series but the book stayed strong and in some ways improved as a solo book. One thing I wished the series had had, however, was more character development for his BPRD companions (particularly Abe and Liz) and they sort of fell to the wayside early on. It may be a cheat but steeping Hellboy in real life legends, myths and folklore gave the series the impression of a richer and interesting world. I thought it got off to a kinda rocky start but it became a very atmospheric, interesting book that basically elevated the superhero genre and sort of got me out of my fatigue with superheroes and their samey storyline and lack of interesting ideas over the years. r/GuillermoDelToro: A subreddit dedicated to Guillermo del Toro's films, including the Hellboy franchiseĮDIT: thanks for the discussion!
